Music review: Vance Gilbert-old white man-Seattle Post Intelligencer (blog)
Vance Gilbert is not a name known, or at least I'd never heard of him before I listened to this CD, his tenth. But now I think everyone who likes a song with a good story should know Vance Gilbert.
Old White Men appropriately is called, as most of the songs reflect episodes in the life of men. These songs, with minimal accompaniment from acoustic guitar, clarinet and sax used sparingly but effectively, are complex and not the songs of the young and innocent.
The songs deal with love and loss, with those who are not as good as ...
Music review: the CTI all-stars-California concert-Blogcritics.org (blog)
The concert of California was once in a lifetime occasion held at the Hollywood Palladium back in 1971. The event was designed as a showcase for the talents of CTI Records-in fact, they were called the CTI all-stars. Among the talent on stage that night were George Benson (guitar), Freddie Hubbard (trumpet), Hubert Laws (flute), Stanley Turrentine (tenor sax), Hank Crawford (alto sax), Johnny Hammond (organ), Ron Carter (bass), Billy Cobham (drums) and Airto (percussion). With a lineup like this, it would be hard to go wrong, but I wonder if someone just as anticipated.
Music: Jessie Dee channels Otis Redding to Paradise-Enterprise News
If the ghost and the sounds of Otis Redding lived Jesse Dee, who are we to complain?
Jesse Dee of Arlington is the latest and one of the best of the crop of new soul artists who sailed their trade in classic mode. Namely that the young artists as Dee, James Hunter Eli "Paperboy" Reed, Britain in Brookline and Raphael Saadiq of California are crafting their own soul music exciting and invigorating, while incorporating the best features of vintage Motown, Stax Records and 1950 's rhythm and blues.
Of course, when someone like Dee, a twenty-something ...
DVD Review: ' Jazz icons 5 ' Boxed Set-JazzTimes Magazine
By contemporary standards, the films of John Coltrane, performing at Jazz Festival Antibes in France in July 1965 is subparagraph: black and white, slightly out of focus, camera angles, amateurish. The average kid playing around with his smartphone can post higher quality videos on YouTube.
But hell with contemporary standards. Passionate about not jazz would be nailed by Coltrane and his classic Quartet — McCoy Tyner, Elvin Jones and Jimmy Garrison — in their only known public performance of "A Love Supreme," Coltrane's masterpiece? Before we get to it — the group saved the suite for ...
Thorogood, Guy back to bis-Montreal Gazette
George Thorogood and the Destroyers return to Metropolis, on 7 June, after tearing the place in 2010. Thorogood is running behind 2120 South Michigan Ave., his tribute to the label Chess Records.
And on the subject of legends, giant chess blues Buddy Guy, who did a doubleheader with George Thorogood at the 2007 Montreal International Jazz Festival, is also back to the same venue. Guy will be in Metropolis the 14 April; vintage soul sounds of James Hunter will kick off the evening.
Both shows are part of a lot more recent than low season concerts presented by ...
